In Winchester, you can enjoy walking in the footsteps of the great authors in the stunning countryside and fresh air. We believe you might feel as Elizabeth Bennet did "The country air is a balm to the soul, a welcome change from the stifling rooms of town."

Winchester has been busy celebrating 250 Years of Austen, paying homage to her final resting place, her stunning novels and her far reaching literary influence. The city has inspired poets like John Keats, who wrote his famous Ode to Autumn while walking its historic streets. Winchester is also home to one of the oldest bookshops in Britain, and boasts a variety of independent bookstores and seasonal events. Whether through its links to classic authors or it’s thriving literary culture today, Winchester has always been, and remains a haven for book lovers.

You can visit Austen’s house, Britain’s oldest book shop P&G Wells and The Deanery Bookstall run by volunteers looking after a huge array of different genres.  Keats Walk is a self-guided trail so you can wander at your leisure and see the sights that inspired the poem.

Winchester on the big screen

Not only did our beloved authors and poets reside right here in our fair city, Winchester has also played a vital role on the big screen, bringing well know books to life through film and TV adaptations.

The film Les Misérables (2012), based on Victor Hugo’s classic (and long) novel happened to be filmed right here! Tom Hooper chose Winchester College, where the wonderful architecture doubled as 19th-century Paris. You can visit the College today and join it’s guided tours.

The Da Vinci Code (2006) – This adaptation featured Winchester Cathedral as a stand-in for the Vatican.  You can while away many hours at the Cathedral today enjoying tours, displays of architecture and treasures, concerts, exhibitions, café and the gift shop.

Although not quite a film, Wolf Hall (2015, a historical drama based on Hilary Mantel's Booker Prize-winning novel) was made here too, showcasing Winchester’s medieval charm. Winchester is steeped in medieval appeal, you can visit the Great Hall in Winchester Cathedral, see the legendary Round Table where Arthur and his men sat and explore the Westgate Museum with its medieval defences and stories from prisoners during that time.
